Ray has been a cattleman for most of his life, raising registered black Simmental cattle on his ranch in Eastland County. He grew up "a little bit of everywhere". His father worked in the oilfields, and they moved frequently. One of 5 children, he attended school in Breckenridge. While working as a meat cutter, Ray earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Midwestern University.
